U.S. Claims Two Bronze Medals in Short Track Speedskating

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. (February 17, 2000) -- Day One of Short Track Speedskating competition at the 2000 Winter Goodwill Games saw Canadian speedskater Francios-Louis Tremblay win the gold, finishing first in the Men's 500 meter race at the 1980 Rink in the Olympic Arena of Lake Placid, N.Y. Trembley's time of 42.497 was followed by silver medalist Fabio Carta of Italy, who finished with a time of 42.773. American Rusty Smith of Sunset Beach, Calif., took the bronze medal with a time of 50.621.

In the Women's 1000 meter race, Yang Yang (A) of China won the gold medal with a time of 1:40.771. Bulgaria's Evgenia Radanova earned the silver with a time of 1:40.906, and American Amy Peterson of St. Paul, Minn., claimed the second bronze medal of the day for the U.S. with a time of 1:41.278.

In the Women's 3000 meter relay heats, teams from China, Japan, Canada and Korea qualified for tomorrow's final. The team finalists for tomorrow's Men's 5000m relay are Canada, Italy, United States and Japan. The second day of speedskating will also feature the Women's 500 meter race and the Men's 1000 meter race. The medal race will continue Friday, February 18, at 12 p.m.
