Zoeggeler Dominates Men's Luge
LAKE PLACID, NY(Feb. 18, 2000) - Italy's Armin Zoeggeler won the Winter Goodwill Games gold medal in the men's luge competition with a combined two-run time of 1 minute and 48.984 seconds.
Jarosiav Slavik (SVK) broke through to win the silver medal in 1:50.527 while Gerhard Gleirscher (AUT) took the bronze in 1:50.865.
"Of course this is one of the first tracks where we all had the same amount of training so I am very proud to have won this race," Zoeggeler said.
Five men withdrew from competiton prior to the start of the race. Athletes cited bringing the wrong equipment for the new track and safety concerns as their reason for withdrawal.
American Adam Heidt (Lake Placid, NY) was in silver medal position after the first run, but slipped to fourth overall after the second run. Clay Ives (Lake Placid, NY) finished in ninth.
