Germany Takes Gold and Silver in Women's Luge
LAKE PLACID, NY (Feb. 18, 2000) - Germany's Sylke Otto won the Winter Goodwill Games gold medal in the women's luge competition with a combined two-run time of 1 minute and 38.023 seconds. Teammate Silke Kraushaar joined her on the podium winning the silver medal in 1:38.445.
Iluta Gaile (LAT) earned the bronze medal with a time of 1:38.942.
"It is a very good feeling to have two of our team members win medals," said Claus Alt, German women's head coach. "We are very happy and I think they are happy too. It is not an easy track."
American women Ashley Hayden (Westboro, Mass.), Becky Wilczak (River Forest, Ill.), and Brenna Margol (Sawyer, Mich.) finished 12th, 13th and 15th respectively.
Luge competition at the 2000 Winter Goodwill Games concluded today with the women's event.
