Hamilton Slides Away With the Gold
LAKE PLACID, NY (Feb. 19, 2000) - Alex Hamilton of Great Britain captured the gold medal in the women's skeleton with a 4-run combined time of 4 minutes and 11.22 seconds.
Switzerland's Maya Bieri won the silver medal in 4:12.52 and Canada's Michelle Kelly came in at 4:13.03 to win the bronze medal.
"In my fourth run I had to be more determined, not more aggressive. In our sport you have to relax to get fast times," Hamilton said.
Despite the small field of competitors, competition was strong as the athletes fought to remain in the medals over the two-day competition.
American Lee Ann Parsley (Logan, W.Va.) competed in her first year on the World Cup Team with a strong showing at the Winter Goodwill Games and a fourth place finish. She finished with a combined time of 4:14.84.
"We're very inexperienced…so compared to these ladies we feel fortunate just to have done as well as we did this year," Parsley said.
Men's skeleton got underway with the first two of four runs being contested today. American Jim Shea (Lake Placid, NY) leads the field and teammate Chris Soule (Bridgeport, Conn.) currently stands in bronze position. Medals will be decided when the competition concludes Sunday.
