Norway Edges Austria to Claim Team Jumping Gold
LAKE PLACID _ Norway, on the strength of two 131.5-meter jumps by Morten Aagheim, edged Austria 757.6-756.9, to win the Winter Goodwill Games Team Jumping gold medal Saturday at the MacKenzie-Intervale Jumping Complex.
Germany won the bronze medal with 720.7 points. The United States finished fourth with 651.5.
The Norwegian team of Tom Aage Aarnes, Arne Sneli, Tore Sneli and Aagheim had to sweat out the jump of Austria’s Martin Koch before celebrating its win. Koch posted the best jump of the day _ 133.0 meters, good for 138.9 points _ but it was not enough to overtake the Norwegians.
Aagheim downplayed his accomplishments.
"It was OK," he said. "I can jump a little better, but today was not bad."
Koch, who leapt 128.5 meters in the first round, was happy with his jumping and his team’s showing.
"I am very glad that everything was good today, and I am very proud."
