Latvian Bobsled Team Earns Gold
LAKE PLACID, NY(Feb. 20, 2000) - Prusis/Ozols of Latvia claimed the gold medal in a four-run combined time of 3 minutes and 49.35 seconds. Germany's Lange/Behrendt slid to second place finish with a time of 3:49.35.
Americans Brian Shimer (Naples, FL/Lake Placid, NY) and Pavle Jovanovic (Toms River, NJ) completed the Winter Goodwill Games with a third place finish. The respectable combined time of 3:50.70 was enough for USA I to capture the bronze medal.
"It was a difficult track for everybody but I adapted very quickly. I have 17 years of experience so that is why I can adapt." Prusis said.
Prusis, the veteran driver was able to conquer both the field and Mt. Van Hoevenberg's challenging new course.
While still in contention, CAN I and USA II each suffered a crash during the third heat of competition. Although eliminated, these disappointed athletes were able to walk off the track without serious injury.
