Norwegians dominate wind shortened jump at Goodwill Games
LAKE PLACID, N.Y. (Feb. 20) - High winds forced cancellation of the
final round of 120-meter jumping Sunday on the last day of the inaugural
Winter Goodwill Games, giving Morten Aagheim of Norway the gold medal.
Alan Alborn (Anchorage, AK) finished 8th to lead the three Americans.
Aagheim jumped 128 meters on his jump, good for 132.9 points. Silver
medalist was Arne Sneli, another Norwegian, with 117.3 points from his
121-meter jump. Michael Neumayer of Germany also went 121 meters but
lost style points and settled for the bronze medal (114.3 points).
Alborn - who had set the old hill mark of 130 meters in winning the K120
jumping title a year ago at the Chevy Truck U.S. championships -
finished eighth with a jump of 113 meters and 102.4 points. Brendan
Doran (Steamboat Springs, CO) was 14th and Clint Jones (also Steamboat)
was 19th.
Martin Koch of Austria, who set the hill record of 133 meters Saturday
in the team competition, went 136 meters on his lone jump, but fell on
landing and wound up sixth.
