Bergoust Leads American Sweep in Men's Aerials; Brenner Win's Women's Event by Wide Margin
LAKE PLACID - Eric Bergoust (Missoula, Mt.) outdueled two American teammates to win the Winter Goodwill Games men's aerials Saturday night at the MacKenzie-Intervale Jumping Complex and lead an American sweep of the event.
In the women's competition, Veronica Brenner of Canada landed the two highest-scoring jumps to win her event.
Bergoust, the defending World and Olympic Champion, scored 247.86 points to edge Britt Swartley (Blue Bell, Pa.), who won the silver medal (246.43 points). Joe Pack (Park City, Utah) won the bronze medal with a score of 245.98 points.
Brenner scored 182.47 points to outdistance silver-medal winner Nannan Xu of China, who finished with 171.81 points. Brenda Petzold of Andover, Mass. Scored 163.63 to claim the bronze medal.
The Goodwill Games were founded by Time Warner Vice Chairman R.E. Turner in 1986 to ensure that the world's best athletes have the opportunity to compete in world class competition. The four previous Goodwill Games have alternated between the United States and Russia; however, future Games will be staged in countries around the world in both winter and summer formats. In addition to the Winter Goodwill Games, plans are underway for the 2001 Goodwill Games in Brisbane, Australia. TNT is the host network for both events.
