Seven Athletes to be Featured in Promotional Campaign for the 2000 Winter Goodwill Games.
The 2000 Winter Goodwill Games and TNT, the Games host network, will feature seven top athletes in a comprehensive broadcast and print campaign promoting the first-ever Winter Games, to be held in Lake Placid, New York, from February 17-20 (with an Opening Celebration on the 16th). Olympic Champion Dan Jansen, who will serve as a commentator for TNT, will also be featured in the broadcast portion of the campaign.
The featured athletes, each champions in their respective disciplines, are: Oksana Baiul, Olympic gold medalist, figure skating; Chad Fleisher, two-time Olympian and reigning U.S. downhill champion; Ann Battelle, three-time Olympian and World Cup moguls champion; Jim Shea, 1999 Skeleton World Champion; Chris Thorpe and Gordy Sheer, Olympic Silver Medalists, luge; and Tricia Byrnes, 1999 Snowboard Halfpipe World Champion. All featured athletes will be competing in the first-ever Winter Goodwill Games.
"The athletes are our most valuable promotional asset," said Rick McNerney, Goodwill Games vice president of marketing. "They represent excellence both on and off the field of play."
The Games, with the support of Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. parent company, Time Warner, Inc., will incorporate the athletes in all elements of the print, broadcast and presence campaigns. TNT is shooting the television spots in Los Angeles on November 4 and 5 with all of the featured athletes and Jansen. The far-reaching campaign will include 3,900 announcements on 15 Turner Broadcasting networks (eight domestic and seven international), which will begin airing in late November and run through the Games. The spots will be shown on TNT, TBS Superstation, Cartoon Network, CNN, CNN Headline News, Airport Network, CNN/Sports Illustrated, CNN International and other Turner networks. Each spot will be tagged with appropriate sponsor branding.
In addition, Goodwill Games promotions will appear on the TV Guide Channel, Delta In-Flights nationally, and various cable and radio outlets in 11 key markets: New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Boston, Seattle, Detroit, Atlanta, Minneapolis and Washington, D.C. A comprehensive print and outdoor campaign will accompany the broadcast promotion. National print placements include major magazines and newspapers, as well as outdoor billboards in the 11 key markets. The total value of the advertising campaign exceeds $8 million.
The Goodwill Games and their partners at ORDA (the Olympic Regional Development Authority) are organizing the Games. ORDA was established in 1981 under legislation enacted by the State of New York to operate, maintain and promote the 1980 Winter Olympic facilities in the Lake Placid region.
Tickets for the 11-sport event range in price from $5 to $46. Approximately 150,000 tickets will be available for sale for the five-day period. Tickets can be purchased by visiting or calling the Olympic Center Box Office, at 518.523.3330, through Ticketmaster® at 518.476.1000 or 802.862.5300 and via the Internet at www.goodwillgames.com or www.tickets.com. Tickets are also available through all usual ORDA ticket outlets.
The Goodwill Games were founded by Time Warner Vice Chairman R.E. Turner in 1986 to ensure that the world's best athletes have the opportunity to compete in world class competition. The four previous Goodwill Games have alternated between the United States and Russia; however, future Games will be staged in countries around the world in both winter and summer formats. In addition to the Winter Goodwill Games, plans are underway for the 2001 Goodwill Games in Brisbane, Australia. TNT is the host network for both events. Goodwill Games, Inc., is a division of Turner Sports, the sports programming and production business unit of Turner Broadcasting, Inc.
