| Brief Description: |
Downhill - The crown jewel of alpine racing, downhill is a high-speed race with racers sometimes reaching speeds up to 80 miles an hour in some stretches, depending on the course. A skier's ability to remain aerodynamic throughout the course is critical, so the racer tries to maintain a "tuck," squatting as low over the skis as he or she can with the ski poles pulled tightly against the ribs to reduce any potential aerodynamic drag. The course is marked with a series of control gates - racers must ski between the gates, which obviously set the general route down the course. Forcing skiers to go around the gates sometimes slows a skier heading into tricky, treacherous stretches. It's strictly beat-the-clock, no judging, no "style" points, just fastest racer wins. |
