Brief Description: Short track speedskating is contested on 110-meter ovals (a hockey or figure skating rink). The Winter Goodwill Games featured the 500 and 1000 meters, along with a men's and women's relay. Short track is skated in a pack of four to six skaters, with a series of elimination rounds leading up to the final. Skaters wear aerodynamic suits that are skin tight. Because there are many falls in short track, a helmet, gloves, knee pads and shin guards are required. Short track is a fast-action sport of thrills and spills.

Lake Placid Connection: The first Winter Olympic gold medalist from the U.S. was Charles Jewtraw of Lake Placid, N.Y. Jewtraw won the gold in the 500 on January 26, 1924 in Chamonix, France. Known for his explosive first 100 yards, Jewtraw's best 100 yards was 9.4 seconds, still remarkable by today's standards. Also, Eric Heiden made history in Lake Placid when he swept the men's long track Speedskating competition at the 1980 Olympic Winter Games, winning all five events and setting records in each.
