   Each athlete jumps twice,
the winning team is determined by
   the highest cumulative score
(3 out of 4 jumps count)
Brief Description: Jumpers earn points based on the distance they travel from the end of the jump to the spot where they land on the hill. Because they are following the contour of the hill when they jump, skiers are at a max of perhaps 15-20 feet off the ground when they jump. Markers, generally placed a meter apart down the length of the hill, pinpoint the midpoint of the skis on landing. Five judges evaluate from a tower alongside the hill. They award points - at half-point increments - from zero to 20 based on style, including a mandatory Telemark landing (a genuflection-style landing). If a skier falls, he automatically takes a 10-point deduction from each judge. The high score and low score are tossed out, and the other three judges' scores are totaled, then added to the points awarded for distance (thus, a skier who falls automatically loses 30 points -10 for each of the judges whose score is used). Skiers get two jumps and the total points from both jumps determine the order of finish.
