Games Boost for Brisbae Hotels
Brisbane's hotel industry is set for a
welcome boost next year when 4,500 athletes, VIPs, broadcasters
and officials converge on the city for the 2001 Goodwill Games
Brisbane.
Between 29 August and 9 September, 16
hotels will play host to the official Games visitors, who
will spend more than 20,000 room nights in Brisbane.
2001 Goodwill Games Brisbane Chief Executive,
Mr Campbell Rose, said the influx of athletes, officials,
broadcasters and VIPs for the Games would bolster Brisbane's
hotel industry in a traditionally non-peak period.
"Late August through early September
is generally a shoulder season for Brisbane hotels, with most
experiencing moderate room occupancy," he said.
"However, we estimate that these
visitors will increase total hotel room nights in Brisbane
by approximately 20 per cent during this period compared to
previous years.
"That's a significant boost."
However, Mr Rose said the 16 hotels hosting
these guests wouldn't be the only ones to benefit from the
Games.
"In February, we will launch an nation-wide
marketing campaign to promote the Games to Australians,"
he said.
"This campaign will have a strong
destination focus and encourage people to combine the Games
with a holiday, helping to ensure the benefits of the Games
are spread far and wide throughout Brisbane, the Gold and
Sunshine Coasts and other Queensland destinations."
Tickets to the 2001 Goodwill Games Brisbane will go on sale
early next year.
Announcements regarding the awarding of
contracts for inbound and wholesale packaging of the Games
will be made in February.
