Goodwill Games Family Welcomes Volunteers

A crucial foundation of the 2001 Goodwill Games volunteering program will be laid tonight during a welcome function hosted by Games organisers at South Bank's Thiess building.

About 100 volunteers who have been selected as team leaders and supervisors will be welcomed to the Games family, as part of a team building and information-sharing exercise.

The volunteers were recruited as leaders after a series of interviews by Games organisers in partnership with Volunteering Queensland, following the closure of applications on January 31.

2001 Goodwill Games Chief Executive Campbell Rose said the leaders would be the first of 3500 volunteers due to join the organisation before the event gets underway on August 29.

``We have had an outstanding response from the community to help out during the Games,'' Mr Rose said.

``To date we have received more than 3000 applications to fill 2000 positions. In addition to this, 1500 volunteers will be sourced by the national sporting organisations representing the 14 sports competing at the Games.

``Our team will be sifting through each and every application very closely to ensure we recruit the best volunteer workforce possible. It is a very lengthy process and we ask our applicants to bear with us during this period.''

Mr Rose said his team was overwhelmed by the calibre of experience of those who had applied, including deputy mayors, professors, full-time parents, retirees and teachers.

The 100 volunteer leaders welcomed tonight will be joined by a further 20 team leaders and supervisors in the near future.

These leaders will work closely alongside Games organisers in the recruitment and training of the remaining volunteer workforce, the second phase of which is due to get underway in April.

Games organisers will update every applicant during March. All recruitment will be completed by early June, when applicants will be informed whether they have been selected or not.

The Thiess Building will house the Games' main Operation Centre during competition.
