Top Race Director to Lead Goodwill Triathletes

2001 Goodwill Games triathletes are in safe hands with the appointment of one of
Australia's top triathlon race directors; Garth Prowd.

Mr Prowd, who heads Queensland-based United Sports Marketing, has been appointed by Games organisers to manage the success of the two triathlon races set to take place during the 12-day sporting extravaganza.

The races, which will be staged in the heart of Brisbane's CBD, will see 50 of the world's top triathletes compete in the individual female and male contests.

Both events will run over an Olympic distance course, including a 1500m swim through the Brisbane River and a 40km bike ride and 10km run around the hub of the Goodwill Games at South Bank.

Both races will be free to the public, who will be encouraged to line the streets in support of the world's elite triathletes, including Brisbane's own Loretta Harrop, who is currently ranked number two in the world.

And it is the promise of directing such calibre of talent that has Garth Prowd excited to take up the challenge.

``It is great to be involved in the Goodwill Games as it will probably be the most important triathlon event ever to come to Queensland,'' Mr Prowd said.

``Brisbane will provide a great backdrop with the city in the background, a challenging course for competitors and an absolutely spectacular venue for spectators - something Brisbane's been crying out for.''

Mr Prowd, who is best known for his work in building the Noosa Triathlon Multi Sport Festival, was also instrumental in developing the Australian Triathlon Series through the 1980s and instigated the Mooloolaba Triathlon in 1993; Australia's second largest triathlon after Noosa.

2001 Goodwill Games Brisbane chief executive Campbell Rose welcomed Mr Prowd to the team.

``The experience Garth brings to the Games will prove invaluable to the ultimate success of the two triathlon races,'' Mr Rose said.

``His expertise will not only draw athletes and spectators, but will go a long way towards ensuring the smooth running of what is sure to be one of the most exciting triathlon courses of 2001.'' .
