Goodwill Games Boost for Gold
Coast
The Gold Coast is set to reap rewards from the
2001 Goodwill Games being staged in Brisbane from August 29
to September 9 next year.
2001 Goodwill Games Brisbane Chief Executive
Campbell Rose said the Gold Coast would benefit both directly
and indirectly from the biggest international sporting event
of 2001.
``Kurrawa Beach already has been named the location
for surf lifesaving,'' Mr Rose said.
``This event will involve more than 100 competitors
and officials, all of whom will converge on the Coast for
two days of competition plus preparation time.
``As well as staying at local hotels, these
people and the thousands who flock to watch the competition,
will patronise a range of businesses including restaurants
and retailers.
``And all of this is during a non-school holiday
period at a time of the year traditionally a little quieter
for the Coast.''
Mr Rose said benefits would not end when the
Games did, with massive future potential for the region's
tourism industry.
``Surf lifesaving at Kurrawa Beach, as well
as images of the rest of the Gold Coast region, will be broadcast
to more than 450 million households across 100 countries throughout
the world through the power of the Turner Broadcasting network,''
he said.
``I cannot think of a better way to encourage
potential visitors to come to the Gold Coast than through
magnificent images of our beaches, hinterland, weather and
facilities. The opportunities this presents the tourism industry
are immeasurable.''
And in a further tourism boon, an international
marketing campaign valued in excess of US$107 million will
promote south-east Queensland and the 2001 Goodwill Games
to key United States and world markets.
The 2001 Goodwill Games Brisbane runs for 12
days and includes more than 1,300 of the world's top athletes
competing across 14 sports.
