Games Launch Volunteer Drive
THREE thousand volunteers are needed to help
drive the success of the 2001 Goodwill Games to be held in
Brisbane from August 29 to September 9 next year.
Launching the recruitment drive today at celebrations
marking the start of International Year of the Volunteer,
2001 Goodwill Games Brisbane Chief Executive, Mr Campbell
Rose, said the help of volunteers was essential to ensuring
successful Games.
"Our beautiful sunshine city is going to
play host to the biggest sporting event in the world next
year,'' he said.
"Just like at the Sydney Olympic Games,
we are going to rely on the dedicated work of volunteers to
help make the 2001 Goodwill Games a success.
"We are expecting more than 1300 of the
world's top athletes to compete in hundreds of events across
14 sports. We need volunteers to help at every single event
at every venue.''
Mr Rose said no experience in volunteering was
necessary as training would be provided.
"We're looking for people of all backgrounds,
with all types of skills and abilities,'' he said.
"We've only got two key criteria
enthusiasm and commitment. We need you to launch yourself
whole-heartedly into your role to make the 2001 Goodwill Games
a huge success.''
Mr Rose said a worldwide audience of more than
450 million households were expected to tune in to the event.
"Next year's Games will be the first to
be hosted outside of the United States and Russia. They'll
give us the opportunity to put Brisbane on the map.''
Mr Rose encouraged volunteers to register as
soon as possible as interest was already high.
