Local Dancers Join Stars
in Games Gala
Hundreds of young Queensland
dancers today vied to share centre stage with top Australian
and international recording artists at the 2001 Goodwill Games
Opening Gala, on August 28.
At the first dance cast auditions for the Gala
today, the dance hopefuls strutted their stuff at Brisbane
Entertainment Centre in an attempt to be selected for the
show.
Opening Gala Artistic Director Patrick Burns
said the show was a once in a lifetime opportunity for local
dancers to perform alongside the cream of national and international
musical talent.
"The Opening Gala will be a spectacular
night of entertainment on a scale not seen in Queensland since
the 1982 Commonwealth Games," Mr Burns said.
"The successful dancers will have the unforgettable
experience of performing in an event that will be televised
to a worldwide audience of millions of people.
"The dancers we select at these initial
auditions will provide the visual big picture at the Opening
Gala, which is an important role for setting the overall look
of the event. These parts are most suited to young performers,
such as dance students.
"We will also be holding later auditions
for professional dancers to perform in featured sections of
the show."
Mr Burns said the Opening Gala would be an international
celebration of music and culture, with special Queensland
elements.
"The show will combine Australian and international
artists, world class production values, dazzling lighting
and special effects and an energetic young cast. This all
adds up to an unforgettable entertainment and cultural experience!"
The Opening Gala is the flag ship event for
the Goodwill Games Celebration Program, which also features
an exciting RiverConcert series on a floating river stage
at South Bank, fireworks, street entertainment and a feast
of cultural and arts events.
The Opening Gala will be held at the Brisbane
Entertainment Centre.
