Games Benefits Flow to Queensland Business

Queensland companies are helping Australia win the race against overseas firms to land lucrative contracts from the 2001 Goodwill Games and sharing $7 million worth of business in the process.

Speaking in Brisbane at the Queensland Events Business Breakfast today, 2001 Goodwill Games Chairman Wayne Goss said Australian businesses had won far more contracts for vital Games services than overseas companies.

"To date, Australian companies have won around $7 million in business from the Goodwill Games, compared to the $2.3 million that has been awarded to date to overseas companies," Mr Goss said.

"One of our most important agreements is the $1 million worth of contracts we have awarded to national sporting organisations to manage and deliver several Games sports, such as basketball and diving.

"With these contracts, the Goodwill Games is not only recognising the expertise of these organisations on the world stage, it is helping to ensure the ongoing development of these sports in Australia."

Other local companies are providing important contributions to delivery of the Games.

"Tarong Energy recently won a $750,000 contract to provide air conditioning for the Chandler Aquatic Centre, where our swimming competition will be held," Mr Goss said.

"The Queensland-based All Data Electrical is another winner from the Games, landing the $375,000 contract for providing communications systems at several venues."

Queensland business will also play a large role in delivering some of the more eye-catching aspects of the Games.

"Brisbane company Dot Dash snared a $110,000 contract for signage and pageantry to dress up the city in the Games theme colour of red," Mr Goss said.

"Our Games workforce will stand out in uniforms designed by the Gold Coast's Bev Schutt Designs, while the floral bouquets that will be held aloft by medal-winners will be produced by Brisbane's Baggaley's Florist."

Mr Goss said there were another 10 tenders for Games associated projects to be issued in the coming weeks with a value to business close to $5 million, much of which is expected to go to local companies.

"From the basic nuts and bolts of running the Games to putting up our athletes in Brisbane hotels and dressing the city to shine for the world, the Goodwill Games is a boon to business in Queensland."
