Goodwill Extends to People with Disabilities

2001 Goodwill Games organisers have made a concentrated effort to ensure people with a disability are catered for, by making special provisions for transport, information and seating arrangements.

Ticketing and other Games information will be available for those with visual and hearing impairments, through braille and audio services at the 2001 Goodwill Games Head Office, while the Australian Communication Exchange will have direct access to Ticketek agents.

2001 Goodwill Games Chairman Wayne Goss said his team had taken great care in trying to accommodate people with a disability, meaning people with mobility, vision, hearing or intellectual disabilities can use facilities independently, equitably and with dignity.

``It is of upmost importance to us that we do not overlook anyone in our community, particularly those with a disability,'' Mr Goss said.

``We have tried to plan ahead for all aspects of the Games, which could pose a problem for those with a disability.

``We have developed our own guidelines for Games venues and facilities and in so doing have set standards that not only aspire to meet legislation, but anticipate community expectations for such a significant project. Our guidelines will set a benchmark for major international sporting events in the future.''

Special provisions include:

  • Free taxi shuttles from Roma Street Railway Station to Brisbane Games venues will be provided for people with a disability who have tickets to the Games.
  • Those travelling to Kurrawa Beach for Surf Lifesaving will be able to access free shuttle transport from Nerang Railway Station.
  • Convenient parking facilities.
  • The ticketing policy and event brochure is available in braille and audio formats.
  • All Games venues are wheelchair-friendly, with seating allocations specifically reserved for those with extra mobility requirements.
  • The Australian Communication Exchange will have a direct access to Ticketek to complete bookings and have any queries answered.
  • The 2001 Goodwill Games Internet site will post a text copy of the event brochure.
