Goodwill Games Launches Ticket Policy

THE ticketing process for the biggest sporting event on the world's calendar this year will be affordable, accessible and transparent, it was revealed at the launch of the 2001 Goodwill Games ticketing policy today.

State Premier Peter Beattie joined Goodwill Games Chairman Wayne Goss to launch the policy, which details the process for obtaining tickets to the 2001 Goodwill Games in Brisbane.

Unlike the Sydney 2000 experience, tickets will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis. Patrons will buy their tickets by telephone, via the Internet or by visiting their most convenient Ticketek outlet.

The policy shows a total of 330,000 tickets will be available for sale to the public, which amounts to 80 per cent of the total tickets available to 2001 Goodwill Games events. The remainder will be supplied to sponsors, athletes and their families, the media and VIP guests.

An average ticket to a Goodwill Games sporting event will cost $51, with the highest valued ticket $95 and the lowest $10. Surf Life Saving and Triathlon will be free to the public.

The Opening Gala for the Goodwill Games will be held at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre at Boondall, and will include local and international acts. Tickets to the Gala will range between $95 and $150.

Free public transport is included in the cost of all tickets to Goodwill Games events.

Concessions of 10 per cent apply to seniors, children two -15 years, full-time students, the unemployed and government health care cardholders.

Family tickets can also be purchased at a discounted price to some events.

The specially designed souvenir 2001 Goodwill Games Brisbane tickets will be mailed to patrons within five working days.

2001 Goodwill Games Chairman Wayne Goss said the ticketing policy would ensure patrons had equal access to the ticketing system, regardless of their location.

"Simplicity is the key to our ticketing system,'' Mr Goss said.

"The public is well used to dialling a number or visiting a ticketing agent to buy their tickets, and that is what we will give them. No ballots, no confusion.

"We believe this ticketing policy offers patrons a fair opportunity to buy tickets to all events, at a price that represents value for money for a world class event.

"This policy is a clear-cut, open and accountable document. There is no magic about it. The only magic will be when the best athletes in the world visit Brisbane to compete between August 29 and September 9."

Tickets will go on sale at 11am on Friday (April 20, 2001).

Phone TICKETEK: 133 877 (General Public Sales) or 1300 303 877 (Group Sales).
