Games Charter Delivers Goodwill for Queensland
Youth
QUEENSLAND school students
were today offered a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to watch
some of the world's best track and field athletes in action,
through a joint initiative supported by the Queensland Government
and 2001 Goodwill Games.
Project Goodwill 2001 is the result of months
of planning by Goodwill Games organisers as part of the Games
mission and charter to encourage children to participate in
sports as a means of positive character development.
The project will give at least 10,000 school
students from across Queensland a chance to attend one of
four Athletics sessions included in the 2001 Goodwill Games
competition from September 4 - 7.
2001 Goodwill Games Chief Executive Campbell
Rose was delighted to invite state, non-state and all independent
schools from across Queensland to apply for their allocation
of tickets.
``This is not only an exciting initiative for
us, but one which we are fully committed to through our Goodwill
Games Mission Statement,'' Mr Rose said.
``Ted Turner founded the Goodwill Games in 1986
as a means of not only recognising the role that sports play
in the enrichment of humanity but as a way of encouraging
children to choose sports as an avenue for positive character
development.
``Whether making a statement against the Cold
War or helping children around the world, the Goodwill Games
stands as a model and an aspiration for every young, dedicated
athlete.''
Project Goodwill 2001 was launched at Holland
Park State School today by State Premier Peter Beattie with
the support of 1984 Olympic heptathlon gold medallist Glynis
Nunn-Cearns.
Schools are invited to apply for their allocation
of tickets from tomorrow, June 15, by filling in an Application
Form available on the Queensland Education website at www.education.qld.gov.au
Each school may apply for an allocation of 25,
50 or 100 tickets to be used by students and an appropriate
number of adult supervisors or carers.
Students from outside South East Queensland
will also be entitled to a 50 per cent discount on all Queensland
Rail Traveltrain services to help with transport to the Games.
Only Athletics tickets will be available through
this project.
All tickets also include free public transport
on Brisbane Transport bus and ferry services and QR Citytrain
services for travel on the day, to and from the ticketed event.
The Goodwill Games Athletics meet will be staged
over four nights from September 4 - 7 at Brisbane's ANZ Stadium.
Sessions generally commence from 4pm and conclude by 10pm.
Applications for the tickets open on Friday,
June 15, with tickets allocated on a first-come, first-served
basis until applications close on July 27, or until all tickets
have been allocated.
