Brisbane Painted Red in Banner Blitz

Up to 1000 banners will be erected across Brisbane in the lead-up to the 2001 Goodwill Games, including the largest banner ever to be installed on the Story Bridge.
Brisbane will be transformed into a blazing sea of colour when it welcomes thousands of Goodwill Games athletes, interstate, international and local guests from August 29 to September 9.

RED - paint the town is the theme for the Games celebration program and the colour will be prominent throughout the city.

About a week before the Games start, commuters can expect to see a 18 x 10-metre banner erected on the Story Bridge -the largest banner to be installed on the bridge to date.

A dazzling array of flowers, banners, flags and decorations capturing the excitement of the international sporting arena, will light up the heart of Brisbane's CBD, the Games hub at South Bank and official sporting venues.

A red adorned Brisbane Airport is ready to extend the first hand of welcome to the thousands of international and interstate guests heading its way, with about 60 banners and flags flying high at the domestic and international terminals.

Qantas domestic airports at Sydney, Melbourne, Coolangatta and Cairns will also be dressed in Goodwill Games banners.

2001 Goodwill Games Protocol, Ceremonies and Special Events Manager Patrick Burns said everything from banners to flowers would complement the trademark colours of the Goodwill Games.

``As soon as people arrive in Brisbane, whether they travel here by air or road, they will be met with a sea of colour proclaiming this is the place to be,'' Mr Burns said.

Street banners have already been erected along several inner city streets, South Bank and the Roma Street Parklands.

Many of the hotels where athletes are staying during the Games are also getting into the spirit with banners and flags flying in the foyers.

Banners will also be erected at train stations near sports venues, the venues themselves and major roadways leading to the airport and into the city.
