Water Delivery Pours in for Athletes
Athletes and volunteers
will consume more than 210 000 bottles of water during the
2001 Goodwill Games in Brisbane.
An order, placed with official Games sponsor,
Coca-Cola, will see 214,661 bottles of Mount Franklin water
delivered for 12 days of competition from August 29 to September
9.
Athletes and coaches will consume around 142,461
bottles of water during competition, excluding the water consumed
at 20 hotels across Brisbane where athletes and team officials
will be staying.
Volunteers will consume around 72,200 bottles
of water including the bottles provided at the beginning of
each shift and those consumed with meals at sporting venues.

Manager Clint Flood said a further 31,188 bottles of the sports
drink, Powerade, and 2,000 sipper bottles were also on order
for the Games.
"Some of the athletes involved in high
intensity sports, such as basketball and volleyball, will
drink more during competition than other athletes because
they are more prone to dehydration," he said.
"Athletes request bottled water at all
competitions to avoid any change to their diets and ensure
they are fit and healthy for the Games."
Mr Flood said there was no need to build an
Athlete Village similar to the Sydney Olympics, as athletes
and team officials would be staying at hotels across the city
to reduce costs and inject money into Queensland's hotel industry.
"Each hotel will provide their own menus
and catering for their clients, which will include many more
bottles of water and sports drink," he said.
