Welcome from The Honourable Peter Beattie MLA
As Premier, I'm delighted that Queensland will host the first major international sporting event in the new millennium - the 2001 Goodwill Games Brisbane.
It will be the world's biggest sporting event that year, and the first time these Games will be held outside the United States and Russia.
The Goodwill Games are an event which reflect a commitment by one of the 20th century's most significant businessmen to developing sports. Ted Turner - who started the Goodwill Games in 1986 - sees the contest in sport as a bonding element for men and women of all nationalities to pursue higher ideals.
My Government supports him, his philosophy and these Games.
The atmosphere in Brisbane will be electric and we hope you will be here to help us celebrate this exciting event.
1,300 of the world's top athletes will converge on Brisbane to compete in 14 sports. No heats - just finals.
For Queensland, the Goodwill Games will generate almost 2000 jobs and inject more than $170 million into the state economy.
Come and visit us in Australia's lifestyle capital - Brisbane. We'll show you how to say G'day.
