Featuring eight of the world's best teams and some of the top rising stars, the 2001 Goodwill Games Basketball program will be a cracker. The contest will be battled out over six grueling days at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre (BCEC) from Monday, September 3 to Sunday, September 9. Thursday, September 6 will be a rest day.

The teams confirmed to compete for Goodwill Games glory include Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Cuba, New Zealand, Puerto Rico and the United States.

Preliminary rounds will see the teams separated into two groups of four teams. Each team will play a round-robin competition within its group (three games each). The two top teams from each group will advance to the medal round, while the remaining teams will play-off in a classification round to determine their final placing in the competition.

The Australian team will be keen to improve on its silver medal performance at the 1998 New York Goodwill Games, when it was narrowly defeated in extra time by the US.
