Adding a unique Australian touch to this year's Goodwill Games will be Surf Lifesaving, making its debut in an international multi-sport event.

Surf Lifesaving is one of two events free to the public at the 2001 Goodwill Games and fans are expected to turn out in force to watch the world's top eight teams battle it out over two days of greening competition at the Gold Coast's stunning Kurrawa Beach.

The competition will run over the weekend of September 1-2, with teams from Australia, Canada, France, Great Britain, New Zealand, South Africa, Spain and the United States confirmed their participation.

Each team, consisting of five men and four women, will compete in 12 individual events: mixed board rescue, beach sprint, (m/w), surf race (m/w), surf board race (w), surf ski race (m), ironman/ironwoman, beach flags (m/w) and the lifesaver relay (swim, board, ski, run).

Surf Lifesaving administrators hope the sport's inclusion in the Goodwill Games will bring them a legion of new fans and lead to future inclusion in the Commonwealth and Olympic Games.
