The Goodwill Games Triathlon races promise to be both fiercely contested and picturesque. One of two sports free to the public, Triathlon is expected to draw thousands of spectators to the streets of Brisbane on Sunday, September 2. The South Bank precinct will make a wonderful backdrop for the competition and showcase the Brisbane River and the city's many scenic areas.

The two races will see 50 of the world's top triathletes compete in the individual female and male contests. Both events will run over an Olympic distance course, including a 1.5km swim in the Brisbane River, a 40km bike ride and 10km run around the Hub of the 2001 Goodwill Games at South Bank.

Five of the six Sydney Olympic medallists have confirmed their participation in the Games, including Australia's Michellie Jones, Olympic champion Simon Whitfield (CAN), Olympic silver medallist Stefan Vuckovich (GER) and 1994 and 1998 defending Goodwill Games Triathlon Champion and four time world champion, Simon Lessing. Local Brisbane triathlete and defending Goodwill Games Champion Loretta Harrop and Olympic champion Brigette McMahon (SUI) also will compete.

The athletes will race under the experienced eye of one of Australia's top triathlon race directors, Garth Prowd, best known for his work in building Australia's largest triathlon, the Noosa Triathlon Multi Sport Festival.
