Goodwill Games Tourist Push Takes Off with Airline Sponsor and Travel Operator

Qantas Airways has been named the Official Airline of the 2001 Goodwill Games.

The announcement of Qantas as the Games' latest major sponsor will give wings to the push to attract visitors to Brisbane for the 2001 Goodwill Games, to be held from 29 August to 9 September.

Goodwill Games founder and AOL Time Warner Vice Chairman Ted Turner welcomed Qantas' involvement with the Goodwill Games.

"Through the years, we have partnered with a lot of great companies to stage the Goodwill Games," he said.

"We are happy to now have Qantas Airways on board. Qantas is a top-notch airline and we know they will take good care of the Goodwill Games crew when they travel to Australia for the 2001 Goodwill Games."

2001 Goodwill Games Brisbane Chairman Wayne Goss said the partnership between Qantas and the 2001 Goodwill Games made perfect sense.

"Qantas has a proud reputation for sponsoring some of Australia's biggest and best sporting events and the Goodwill Games promises to be the biggest sporting event of 2001," he said.

"We're delighted to be working together."

The airline announcement coincides with the appointment of General Travel as the Official Inbound and Domestic Travel Operator for the Goodwill Games.

Mr Goss said General Travel, operating as the 2001 Goodwill Games Travel Office, would be packaging the Games for international, interstate and regional Queensland visitors.

"International packages will include a Qantas airfare, three nights accommodation and Games tickets, however, we'll be encouraging visitors to extend their stay in Queensland, visiting other parts of the State and local attractions," he said.

"Domestically, there will be a range of fly and drive packages available in Queensland through Queensland Travel Centres, around Australia through Qantas Holidays and directly through the Goodwill Games Travel Office."

The tourism push was further enhanced today with the launch by the Queensland Premier of the Goodwill Games' Gods of Sport advertising campaign.

The 2001 Goodwill Games will be held from 29 August to 9 September and attract 1300 of the world's best athletes competing in 14 sports.
