Brisbane Receives Goodwill Facelift

THE Queensland capital will be transformed into a blazing sea of colour when it welcomes thousands of Goodwill Games athletes, interstate, international and local guests from August 29 to September 9.

A dazzling array of flowers, banners, flags and decorations capturing the excitement of the international sporting arena, will light up the heart of Brisbane's CBD, the Games hub at South Bank and official sporting venues.

Queensland company Dot Dash, in conjunction with architectural firm HOK Sport, has been appointed to work alongside Games organisers to develop a conceptual design for all venue, field of play and directional signage and pageantry.

2001 Goodwill Games Protocol, Ceremonies and Special Events Manager Patrick Burns said all aspects of the package, including flowers, would be themed to complement the trademark colours of the Goodwill Games.

``As soon as people arrive in Brisbane, whether they travel here by air or road, they will be met with a sea of colour proclaiming this is the place to be,'' Mr Burns said.

``We hope not only to raise the pulse rate of the city during the Games, but to leave a lasting memory of Brisbane imprinted in the minds of all participants and guests.''

Dot Dash director Mark Ross, who was heavily involved in Sydney's way-finding and field of play signage during the Olympics, said he was delighted to be involved with the Goodwill Games.

``Although we are still in the early days of design conception, we are making good headway and are very excited about the Games,'' Mr Ross said.

More than a 1000 Goodwill Games banners will dress sports venues and link several Brisbane sites including Queen Street Mall, the river, domestic and international airport terminals, roadways leading to the airport, main roadways leading into the city as well as the central Games Hub at South Bank.

A jam-packed entertainment and cultural programme, including public concerts on the Brisbane River forms part of Games celebrations.
