Goodwill Games Boost for Sunshine
Coast
The international tourism profile of the Sunshine
Coast is set for a massive boost thanks to the 2001 Goodwill
Games to be hosted by Brisbane from August 29 to September
9 next year.
Images of the Sunshine Coast will be beamed
to more than 450 million households in 100 countries as part
of the international broadcast of the Games.
2001 Goodwill Games Brisbane Chief Executive
Campbell Rose said the exposure generated by this coverage
would be beyond measure.
``The 2001 Goodwill Games will be broadcast
to more than a billion people throughout the world through
the power of the Turner Broadcasting network,'' Mr Rose said.
``As well as coverage of the sporting events,
the telecast will include postcarding of many of Queensland's
wonderful tourism destinations, including the Sunshine Coast.
``I cannot think of a better way to introduce
millions of potential holiday-makers to the Sunshine Coast
than through images of its magnificent beaches, hinterland
and weather.
``You simply cannot buy that kind of mass exposure.
The future potential for the Sunshine Coast is enormous.''
Mr Rose said the Goodwill Games would present
the Sunshine Coast with immediate tourism opportunities.
``We expect many of the 3,500 athletes, officials
and VIPs to tag a short break or holiday onto the end of the
Games period,'' he said.
``With its proximity to Brisbane and wealth
of tourism assets, the Sunshine Coast is likely to receive
many of these holiday-makers at a time of the year traditionally
a little quieter for the Coast.''
And, in a further tourism boon, an international
marketing campaign valued in excess of US$107 million will
promote south-east Queensland and the 2001 Goodwill Games
to key United States and world markets.
2001 Goodwill Games Brisbane will run from August
29 to September 9 and includes the world's top athletes and
teams across 14 sports.
