Ipswich Art Scene Gets Ready...Set...GO!
IPSWICH will share in the
spirit of the 2001 Goodwill Games with an art exhibition exploring
the intrinsic role sport plays in the lives of Australians.
The city will join Brisbane
and the Gold Coast in celebrating the sporting spectacular
when Global Arts Link presents Ready, Set
Go! - Sporting
Life and Australian Art since 1901 from August 17 to November
11.
The program, developed by
Global Arts Link and coordinated in conjunction with Goodwill
Games organisers, features a series of exhibitions and interactive
displays exploring the pivotal role sport plays in the national
psyche and in our daily lives.
Ready, Set
Go! canvasses
the historical and contemporary role of sport in Australia
and salutes not only the country's national champions but
also community sports clubs and heroes.
Paintings and displays will
be sourced from leading galleries as well as from prominent
private collections and include some of the nation's most
treasured memorabilia.
2001 Goodwill Games Brisbane
Chief Executive Campbell Rose said it was appropriate that
Ipswich present such an exhibition.
``Sport is very important
to the Ipswich community,'' Mr Rose said.
``In fact, the city and surrounds
have produced more Olympic athletes per capita than any other
region in Australia.
``This exhibition will give
Ipswich residents the opportunity to celebrate Australian
sport at a time when the whole of south-east Queensland will
be focused on the Games.''
Ready, Set...Go! is an official
2001 Goodwill Games Brisbane celebration event within the
Games' celebration program.
The jam-packed celebration
program runs throughout the 2001 Goodwill Games and will offer
a feast of entertainment and cultural activities, including
free public concerts on the Brisbane River.
2001 Goodwill Games Brisbane
runs from August 29 to September 9 and showcases the world's
top sportsmen and women in 14 exciting sports including swimming,
athletics, figure skating, gymnastics, triathlon and surf
lifesaving.
Ready, Set
Go! will exhibit at Global
Arts Link, d'Arcy Doyle Place, Ipswich.
