Biggest Banner Ever on Story Bridge
A 19-metre-long Goodwill Games banner
weighing 95kg was erected on the Story Bridge today, heralding
the largest banner ever to be installed on the Brisbane landmark.
A seven-member team got a birds-eye view of
the sunrise as they climbed the bridge around 5am to install
the hexagonal shaped banner on the southern end of the bridge.
2001 Goodwill Games Manager for Protocols, Ceremonies
and Special Events, Patrick Burns, said it was the largest
banner ever to be installed on the Story Bridge.
"The banner will welcome visitors to Brisbane
and will let thousands of commuters know they are in the host
city for the 2001 Goodwill Games," he said.
"This is the first time the Goodwill Games
has been held outside United States or Russian territory and
we want our visitors to know how proud Brisbane is to be staging
this event."
"The banner will certainly catch everyone's
attention as the atmosphere rises with only 15 days to go
until the Games start."
The spectacular banner, sporting the Games celebration
colour - RED - is a massive 19-metres wide and 12.5-metres
high.
It took Brisbane City Council offices around
two hours to install the banner.
