Aquashell Departs Sydney for Brisbane's
Goodwill Games
SYDNEY'S famous floating stage, The Aquashell,
is on it's way to Brisbane for the 2001 Goodwill Games, where
it will play host to a feast of world-class entertainment.
The Aquashell was towed out of Darling Harbour
today after a celebration attended by Goodwill Games ambassador
Ian Thorpe, Queensland performer Christine Anu and Queensland
Premier Peter Beattie.
The 100-tonne Aquashell will be pulled up the
700km coastline between Sydney and Brisbane by the tug Leverett,
during a four-day journey - weather and ocean conditions permitting.
Once in Queensland, the dome-shaped stage will
be anchored in front of Brisbane's South Bank beach, where
it will play host to eight free Riverconcerts as part of the
RED
paint the town celebration program of the Goodwill
Games.
Three giant, three-storey high RED spheres,
manufactured by Sydney-based Inflatable Image Technologies,
will join the Aquashell on the Brisbane River for the duration
of the Games.
The 2001 Goodwill Games kick-off in Brisbane
on August 28 with a spectacular Opening Gala at Brisbane Entertainment
Centre headlined by The Corrs and featuring Games athletes
as well as Games founder Ted Turner.
Eight free Riverconcerts, featuring Killing
Heidi, The Whitlams, The Superjesus, Human Nature, Collective
Soul, Debelah Morgan, Kaylan, Bardot, Vanessa Amorosi, Gina
Jeffreys, Lee Kernaghan and Beccy Cole will take place on
the stage.
This will complement an extensive collection
of cultural and social entertainment making up the RED program,
including unplugged performances by leading artists including
Christine Anu and Leah Haywood, theatre, busking, art exhibitions
and orchestral performances.
The 2001 Goodwill Games will feature 14 sports
across 12 days of competition, ending with the Closing Event
on September 9.
