Games Unveils Medals Design

When placegetters at the 2001 Goodwill Games step up to the medals podium they will receive a medal featuring a uniquely Brisbane design.

The design for gold, silver and bronze medals for the Games feature Brisbane's floral emblem the red poinsettia, the Goodwill Games logo and stitching representing the Brisbane River on the medal ribbon.

2001 Goodwill Games General Manager of Protocol, Ceremonies and Special Events Patrick Burns said the design was chosen because it presented an identifiable link to Brisbane as the host city.

"We wanted the medals to symbolise Brisbane because it is such an historic occasion to be the first city to host the Goodwill Games outside the USA or Russia," he said.

"Featuring the red poinsettia creates a strong visual reminder of Brisbane and also links in with the Games theme colour of red and our celebration program RED…paint the town."

The medals were designed by Brisbane-based designer Anne-Maree Lyons and manufactured by AJ Parkes at Salisbury.

A select team of around 80 volunteers has been chosen to help coordinate the medal ceremonies and ensure protocols are carefully executed.

Mr Burns said the team of volunteers would have a vital role during the medal ceremonies to ensure the right medals, flags and anthems were delivered in an athlete's moment of glory.

"With 123 medal ceremonies in 12 days, this will be an intricate task of international importance, but our volunteers will take part in a thorough training program to prepare them for this role," he said.

The volunteers are currently being trained in medal care and security, as well as the order and timing for presenting medals and flower bouquets to the ceremony area. The volunteers helping to raise the flags of the winning athletes have come from a pool of airforce, army and navy cadets to ensure military precision during the ceremonies.

"They will be able to identify almost every flag from around the world after they learn about their design and what various parts of the flag represent," Mr Burns said.

"They will also learn how to operate mechanised flag raising apparatus and flagpoles, how to fold and store them correctly, as well as keeping them well maintained and crease-less."
