Australia's Goodwill Cycling Team Announced

AUSTRALIA'S Cycling team for the 2001 Goodwill Games was announced today as the country's top cyclists, including Olympic Gold medallist Brett Aitken, took their bikes for a spin at the newly revamped Chandler Velodrome.

Aitken joined Brisbane cyclists Chloe Jack and Danny Day to try out the new track, giving a scorching preview of what spectators can expect to see at the Games on September 1 and 2.

President of Goodwill Games Inc. and President of US Cycling, Mike Plant, said the world's best cyclists would be competing in Sprint, 10km Scratch, Kierin, Elimination, 30km Madison, as well as a 20km men's points race and 15km women's points race at the Games.

"Cycling is the first sport to be booked out at the Games and I am pleased Australia has chosen such a strong line-up which should make for great competition," Mr Plant said while visiting Brisbane in the lead-up to the Games.

Aitken, Jack and Day will join Rosealee Hubbard, Mark Renshaw, Katerine Bates, Darren Young, Sean Eadie, Ashley Hutchinson in the Australian team at the 2001 Goodwill Games.

'We look forward to seeing the teams vie for US$90 000 in prize money over two days of competition," Mr Plant said.

The Queensland Government and Brisbane City Council jointly funded the $90 000 refurbishment of the velodrome, which included cleaning, repairing, coating and painting the track, upgrading seats as well as landscaping around the venue.

Deputy Premier, Treasurer and Minister for Sport Terry Mackenroth said the track had a good reputation among athletes in the cycling field and would prove to be an important training and competition venue.

''The British cycling team trained at the Chandler Velodrome and went on to win several medals at the Sydney Olympics so we look forward to seeing the best of the best at this new facility," Cr David Hinchliffe said.

Brisbane City Councillor David Hinchliffe said the upgrade would ensure the velodrome was of the highest standard.

"Brisbane now boasts the best outdoor velodrome in Australia," he said.
