THREE of Australia's
top amateur boxers will compete against a world-class line-up
of athletes, including Olympic gold medallists Guillermo Rigondeaux
and Mario Kindelan at the 2001 Goodwill Games in September.
The boxers will compete for a total prize purse
of $156,000 (USD) over four days of competition from September
6 to 9.
Justin Kane (54kg, Sunshine Coast), Daniel
Geale (67kg, Tasmania) and Paul Miller (75kg, Brisbane origin,
based at AIS in Canberra) will join boxers from the USA,
Ukraine, Germany, Kazakhstan, Romania, Sweden, Turkey and
Uzbekistan when they compete against full teams from Russia
and Cuba.
The Cuban team is particularly strong with 54kg
specialist Guillermo Rigondeaux Ortiz and 60kg Mario Mesa
Kindelan both 2001 World Champions and 2000 Olympic champions.
Olympic bronze medallist Rustam Saidov (Uzbekistan)
is also confirmed for the Goodwill Games.
The final Russian team will be announced just
prior to the competition, and will be selected from two full
teams, which have already begun training in Vladivostok.
The competition will see 48 boxers competing
in 12 weight classes (four boxers per class), including 48kg,
51kg, 54kg, 57kg, 60kg, 63.5kg, 67kg, 71kg, 75kg, 81kg, 91kg
and +91kg.
The first two nights of competition will see
the semi-finals in all weight categories contested from 7
- 10.30pm at Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre.
The finals of the contest will be played out
on September 8 and 9, from noon to 4pm.
