Gold Coast School Comes To The Rescue

A local school has come to the rescue to meet the high demand of hundreds of spectators expected to turn out for the Surf Lifesaving competition at the 2001 Goodwill Games.

Broadbeach Primary School has opened its gates and will allow spectators to park on the oval for a small fee of $2.00 per day during competitions on September 1 and 2.

Principal Andrew Bode said the school grounds would cater for around 600 cars.

"This is going to be a wonderful opportunity for visitors to come to watch a Goodwill Games event on the Gold Coast and we are pleased to offer a hand," he said.

Athlete Mark Williams, from Northcliffe, visited Broadbeach Primary School to thank the school for supporting the competition, which will be the first time Surf Lifesaving has been staged at the Goodwill Games.

Mark will join team members Clint Robinson (Maroochydoore), Ky Hurst (Tugun), Karla Gilbert (Surfers Paradise), Kirsty Holmes (Kawana Waters), Kerri Thomas (Maroochydore), Melissa Hoar (Narooma), Andrew Jackson (Maroochydore), and Zane Holmes (Kawana Waters) at the Games.

2001 Goodwill Games Venue Manager Tony Duffy said a small section of Old Burleigh Road would be closed during competition for pedestrian safety.

Old Burleigh Road, from the corner of Albert Avenue and the Charles Avenue roundabout will be closed from 10am to 4pm on Saturday, September 1 and from 7am to 5pm on Sunday, September 2. Traffic will be diverted along Albert Avenue.

"People will be able to walk across to Kurrawa Beach safely to enjoy the competition and the entertainment planned for the event," Mr Duffy said.

Mental As Anything will be performing at the beach at 2.45pm on Sunday, September 2.

Games organisers are currently working to construct the grandstands for spectator seating, as well as erecting around 10 marquees along the beach and powering the sites.

The nine member Surf Lifesaving team will take on teams of the best surf lifesavers from Canada, France, Great Britain, New Zealand, South Africa, Spain and the United States.
