Games Finalises Triathlon Field

2001 Goodwill Games organisers today announced a triathlon field featuring the cream of international triathlon talent, including the current World Champions, Olympic gold medallists and world number one ranked triathletes.

Australia will field the biggest team in the competition, with seven men and five women confirmed to compete, including current world champion Peter Robertson and world number one Chris Hill.

Adding to the strong Australian men's line up is Chris McCormack, Trent Chapman, Miles Stewart, Greg Bennett and Luke Harrop.

In the women's competition, defending Goodwill Games champion Loretta Harrop will be joined by fellow Australians Nicole Hackett, Emma Carney, Melissa Ashton and Liz Blatchford.

Major international names confirmed to compete include women's world number one and current world champion Siri Lindley (USA) and Sydney Olympic gold medallists Simon Whitfield (CAN) and Brigitte McMahon (SUI). Other top-ranked triathletes in the field include Barbara Lindquist (USA), Rina Hill (NZL), Laura Reback (USA), Craig Watson (NZL) and Hamish Carter (NZL).

2001 Goodwill Games Chief Executive Campbell Rose said triathlon was shaping up to be one of the epic contests of the Games.

"This is a very diverse field, as it features most of the top ten ranked male and female triathletes in the world, together with a number of competitors who have showed great form in recent months," Mr Rose said.

"When these triathletes are pitted against each other it will prove to be a fascinating contest."

Triathlon, one of two Goodwill sports free to the public, will be staged in the heart of Brisbane's CBD on the morning of September 2. A total of 50 triathletes will compete in individual female and male contests.

Both events will run over an Olympic distance course, including a 1500m swim through the Brisbane River, a 40km bike ride and 10km run around the hub of the Goodwill Games at South Bank.

Athletes will compete for a total prize purse of $200,000 (USD) to be divided equally between the men's and women's competitions. Of that amount, $100,000 will be divided amongst the top ten winners in each competition.
