World Medallists Headline Australian Athletics Team For Goodwill Games

A strong Australian athletics team, led by recent World Championship medallists Dmitri Markov and Bronwyn Eagles, is confirmed to compete in the 2001 Goodwill Games in Brisbane from September 4 - 7.

Thirty four athletes were today announced by Athletics Australia, with additional sprinters to be named for the 4x100m and 4x400m relay teams next week, to take the team size to more than 40.

The team includes 19 members from the Australian Team that contested the IAAF World Championships in Edmonton, Canada this month, as well as several athletes returning to the international scene. Some of the names include:

· World champion pole vaulter Dmitri Markov;
· World Championships bronze medallist in the hammer throw Bronwyn Eagles;
· Sydney 2000 Olympic Games silver medallist in the pole vault Tatiana Grigorieva;
· Australian 100m record holder Matt Shirvington;
· Sydney City to Surf winner Susie Power;
· Recent Australian record-setter in the javelin throw, Andrew Currey;
· Seventeen-year-old Georgie Clarke (mile) who is the youngest member of the team;
· Forty-year-old Kerry Saxby-Junna (20k Walk) who is the oldest member of the team;
· Three-time Olympian and former Commonwealth long jump champion Nicole Boegman who is returning after a 12-month lay-off with injury.

Athletics Australia Head Coach Keith Connor said several athletes in the team had the potential to produce a podium finish at the Goodwill Games in front of an inspiring home crowd.

"This team is a strong blend of experience and youth from World Championships team captain Kerry Saxby-Junna, down to rising middle distance runner Georgie Clarke and a number of others making their first major senior team," he said.

"The Goodwill Games is an opportunity for those who performed well at the World Championships to consolidate their position on a world scale, and for those who did not perform so well to make amends against quality international fields.

"Equally importantly, the younger members of the team will be out to make their mark against the best in the world, as they can go into the meet with nothing to lose and everything to gain." The team announced today includes:
