Queensland Premier
Peter Beattie today joined Games organisers to announce the
line up of athletes and countries confirmed to compete at
the 2001 Goodwill Games, together with the prize money for
each sport.
Representatives of the 1300 athletes who will
compete in Brisbane at the prestigious event have already
begun to flood in to the city, with the Australian and US
swim teams, Russian gymnasts and Spanish surf lifesaving team
among recent arrivals.
The stellar lineup of athletes from 70 countries
will compete for a total of $5,156,000 (USD) in prize money
spread across 14 action-packed sports. (For a full list of
athletes and countries please see the following pages). Additional
athlete names will be added to the list prior to the start
of competition, bringing the total number of competitors at
the 2001 Goodwill Games to nearly 1300.
2001 Goodwill Games Chief Executive Campbell
Rose said the event was shaping up to be the sporting highlight
of the year.
"In just three days time Brisbane will play
host to the greatest collection of athletes that has ever
visited Queensland," Mr Rose said.
"With athletes now arriving on a daily basis,
I can only imagine the sporting fever that is going to grip
the city over the next two weeks.
"The Goodwill Games will be a sporting spectacular
unequalled in the Queensland's history and the great news
is people still have a chance to be part of it, with quality
seats still available at most sports."
