New Recycling Plan For 'Green' Games

Spectators at the 2001 Goodwill Games will help trial a new recycling plan, heralding an environmental breakthrough in making Brisbane's sporting venues cleaner and greener.

The Brisbane City Council plan aims to encourage 330 000 ticket holders to mirror their household recycling habits at five sporting venues across Brisbane during the Games.

2002 Goodwill Games Executive Officer Campbell Rose said he was pleased the 2001 Goodwill Games was chosen as the launching pad for the new Waste Minimisation Plan.

"Just as sport epitomises a healthy lifestyle, venues need to demonstrate a healthier and sustainable environment for the spectators to enjoy while they watch our top athletes in competition." he said.

Brisbane Lord Mayor Jim Soorley said several recycling bin stations would be located at each sporting venue during the 2001 Goodwill Games as part of the new plan to reduce the environmental impacts of waste at large events.

"This is the first time in Australia that residents will be able to use a recycling system at a public event that mirrors their recycling practices at home," he said.

"This recycling plan is different to any other used in Australia because it broadens the range of materials that can be recycled, making the process more user friendly than ever."

The bin stations will be clearly marked with yellow for recyclable rubbish, such as all plastic, glass, aluminium containers and coke cups. Food, paper wrappings and other general waste should be placed in bins marked with maroon.

Cr Soorley said the council would continue to encourage and assist all venues and promoters to take up the challenge of installing recycling stations for major events.

"The council aims to roll-out this plan across Brisbane to increase the quantity of waste that is recycled and improve environmental sustainability for future generations," he said.

Mr Rose congratulated the sporting venues for taking part in the Public Place Waste Minimisation Plan and looked forward to having a 'green' Games.

The 2001 Goodwill Games venues taking part in the trial are the Brisbane Entertainment Centre, ANZ Stadium, Sleeman Centre at Chandler, Brisbane Exhibition and Convention Centre and South Bank Piazza.
