MARION JONES STEALS 100M GOODWILL GAMES RECORD

Track superstar Marion Jones (USA) exacted revenge for her world championship loss by snatching Gold in the women's 100-metres at ANZ stadium tonight.

In front of a roaring crowd, Jones edged her rivals out of competition to win in 10.84 and break her own Goodwill Games record of 10.90, which she set in 1998.

"I felt powerful and I dominated the way that I like to do in the race. They say that people always remember your last race so I wanted to end the season well and I did that tonight," Jones said.

After the race tonight, Jones shook hands with adoring fans and signed autographs for many estatic children, who had come to watch their favourite sporting idol as part of the Project Goodwill program which has seen 50,000 athletics tickets provided to school kids around the state.

Jones congratulated the spectators for their support, calling the crowd a "bomb" for egging her on and igniting the atmosphere in the stadium on the opening night of Athletics competition.

Zhanna Pintusevich-Block (UKR) finished with silver in 11.01 ahead of Chandra Sturrup (BAH) who took bronze in 11.13.

Pintusevich-Block conceded that her performance was due to feeling jaded after a busy season.

"It's the end of the season. I'm tired. The World Champs took it out of me," Pintusevich-Block said after the race.

Pintusevich-Block handed Jones defeat in the World Championships in Edmonton last month, her first defeat in the women's100-metres in four years.
