Games Spin Offs for Sunshine
Coast
A multi-million dollar
marketing campaign to publicise the 2001 Goodwill Games and
South East Queensland is expected to reap major tourism benefits
for the Sunshine Coast.
Speaking at the Maroochy Business Forum this
morning, 2001 Goodwill Games Chief Executive Campbell Rose
said the Games were being sold to the public via a destination-based
campaign.
"This means we are not just selling the
Goodwill Games, we are also promoting South East Queensland
as an exciting venue in its own right," Mr Rose said.
"Our international marketing campaign alone
is valued in excess of $107 million (USD) and will promote
the Sunshine Coast and other areas of the region to key United
States and world markets.
"The campaign includes promotional announcements
and vignettes across CNN and TNT in the United States, Europe,
Asia and Latin America in the lead-up to and during Games-time.
"Australia is already a favourite holiday
destination within the United States market, having received
sensational publicity through the Olympic Games and more recently
the Survivor II program.
"Our campaign will further educate international
audiences about South East Queensland's major attractions,
and the Sunshine Coast is one of the best.
"Closer to home we are working closely
with key Sunshine Coast tourism industry representatives,
in particular Tourism Sunshine Coast, on domestic marketing
opportunities through our Tourism Taskforce.
"The 2001 Goodwill Games initiated this
taskforce to keep Queensland tourism groups abreast of our
activities so marketing opportunities promoting both the Games
and the region could be identified.
"An example of these opportunities is an
interstate billboards series we will use to sell the Games
and South East Queensland to southern markets. Our Goodwill
Games travel brochure also promotes the Sunshine Coast."
Mr Rose said the Goodwill Games Sports Schedule
had been designed to give visitors time to combine sightseeing
and attending the Goodwill Games in the one day.
"Most events have several sessions scheduled
throughout the day, so we will be selling the concept of visitors
being able to catch the waves at the Sunshine Coast in the
morning before heading back to Brisbane for the Games."
Qantas Airways is the official airline of the
2001 Goodwill Games. General Travel, operating as the 2001
Goodwill Games Travel Office, is the official Inbound and
Domestic Travel Operator for the Goodwill Games
