Games Benefits Flow to Local
Business
Queensland companies are
helping Australia win the race against overseas firms to land
lucrative contracts from the 2001 Goodwill Games and sharing
$7 million worth of business in the process.
Speaking on the Gold Coast at the Early
Birds Breakfast today, 2001 Goodwill Games Chairman Wayne
Goss said Australian businesses had won far more contracts
for vital Games services than overseas companies.
"To date, Australian companies have won
around $7 million in business from the Goodwill Games, compared
to the $2.3 million that has been awarded to date to overseas
companies," Mr Goss said.
"One of the most important agreements we
have made is the $1 million worth of contracts we have awarded
to national sporting organisations to manage and deliver various
Games sports.
"The Gold Coast's Bev Schutt Designs
is a Queensland company enjoying the business benefits stemming
from Games preparations. The Southport designers beat a prestigious
group of 19 other tenderers, including several overseas companies,
to win the uniform contract for our Games workforce."
Many other Queensland firms are also benefiting
from the Goodwill Games.
"Tarong Energy recently won a $750,000
contract to provide air conditioning for the Chandler Aquatic
Centre, where our swimming competition will be held,"
Mr Goss said.
"The Queensland-based firm All Data Electrical
is another winner from the Games, landing the $375,000 contract
for providing communications systems at several key venues.
"Brisbane company Dot Dash snared a major
contract for signage and pageantry to dress up the city for
the Games, while the Roly Poly Picture Company and BEEPS both
played integral roles in producing our Gods of Sport advertisements.
"One of our most recent appointments was
Baggaley's Florist in Brisbane's CBD, who will produce some
1,000 floral bouquets for the medal ceremonies at the Games.
"Another Queensland appointment is the
$900,000 contract for our venue overlay and maps, while much
of the $2.25 million in work on the ANZ track was performed
by local contractors.
"From the basic nuts and bolts of running
the Games, to dressing our volunteers and bringing the world
to watch our elite athletes perform in Brisbane and the Gold
Coast, the Goodwill Games is a boon to business in south east
Queensland."
