Melbourne Celebrates Goodwill
Ticket Launch
OLYMPIC silver medallist
Tatiana Grigorieva visited Melbourne's Chadstone Shopping
Centre today as part of a national launch of ticket sales
for the 2001 Goodwill Games.
Grigorieva joined fellow Olympic stars Ian Thorpe
in Brisbane and Grant Hackett in Sydney in a live video link-up,
as part of an exciting launch of tickets for the 12-day sporting
extravaganza in Brisbane in August-September.
Goodwill Games President Mike Plant, who flew
out from the USA for the occasion, joined Ian Thorpe and 2001
Goodwill Games Chairman Wayne Goss on the Brisbane podium.
Tickets to the 2001 Goodwill Games went on sale
at 11am today on a first-come, first-served basis through
Ticketek outlets across Australia. Ticket buyers can also
book their seats by phoning 133 877 or via the internet at
www.ticketek.com
Ticket prices range from as little as $10 for
preliminary rounds of the Beach Volleyball through to $95
for the Swimming finals, with the average ticket costing just
$51. Two sports - Triathlon and Surf Lifesaving - will be
free to the public.
Speaking at the Brisbane ticket launch, 2001
Goodwill Games Chairman Wayne Goss said the affordability
and accessibility of the tickets was important to Games organisers.
"We want as many people as possible to
be able to enjoy what promises to be the biggest and most
exciting sporting event of 2001," he said.
"Our prices put them in the reach of every
Australian - giving us all a chance to witness some spectacular
world-class sport."
Some of the world's greatest athletes have already
confirmed their intention to compete at the 2001 Goodwill
Games, including Sydney gold medallists Michael Johnson, Maurice
Greene and Marion Jones.
The 2001 Goodwill Games will be held from 29
August to 9 September and feature 14 action packed sports:
Athletics, Beach Volleyball, Basketball, Boxing, Diving, Figure
Skating, Artistic Gymnastics, Rhythmic Gymnastics, Surf Lifesaving,
Swimming, Trampoline, Cycling, Triathlon and Weightlifting.
