Games Ticket Sales Pass 50,000

Seats at the 2001 Goodwill Games are still proving to be the hottest tickets in town, with a total of 54,000 tickets sold as of 2.45pm today.

2001 Goodwill Games Chief Executive Campbell Rose said while this was a spectacular result, there were still some 276,000 tickets available for the Goodwill Games.

"The demand has been fantastic, with Ticketek phone lines running hot with calls from people wanting to book their seats at the most exciting sporting event of the year," Mr Rose said.

"There are also still hundreds of people lining up all over Brisbane to secure their tickets to the Goodwill Games.

"If people want to beat the queues, our volunteers report there is virtually no wait at Ticketek's Myer Centre outlet in Elizabeth Street.

"Demand is strong at most other outlets and unfortunately patrons may experience some delays in purchasing their tickets.

"We would like to thank people for their patience and the fantastic support they are giving their Goodwill Games, it really is encouraging to see the public's enthusiasm for such a new event in Australia."

A third sports session sold out today - the basketball gold medal and bronze medal games on September 9.

Two sessions sold out yesterday - the men's gold medal swimming final on September 3 and the men's and women's gold medal and bronze medal beach volleyball matches on September 4.

In addition, the afternoon session of beach volleyball on September 3 is almost sold out.

However, Mr Rose said there were still plenty of tickets available at many of the most popular events, such as athletics.

"There are currently 130,000 tickets available for the athletics at ANZ Stadium, so people still have the opportunity to see the world's best track and field athletes in action."

Mr Rose said Brisbane residents could take advantage of the extended trading hours at Ticketek's Myer Centre and South Bank outlets, which will both be open tomorrow.

The Myer Centre Ticketek will be open from 10 - 4pm on Sunday and the South Bank Ticketek will be open 9 - 5pm on Sunday.
