Goodwill Beach Volleyball Fever is Rising

OLYMPIC gold medallists Kerri Pottharst and Natalie Cook are in Brisbane today to give the world's travel buyers a first-hand taste of the excitement of the 2001 Goodwill Games.

Australia's star beach volleyball pair took to the specially designed sand court at the Australian Tourism Exchange, as part of a fun promotion for the Goodwill Games.

Beach Volleyball is certainly a hit with Goodwill Games spectators with more than 60 per cent of seats already booked out. The tickets are the cheapest of all the Goodwill Games ticketed sports, starting at just $10 per adult, per session.

Kerri and Natalie will compete in a field of 64 world-class athletes - 16 women and 16 men's pairs - from August 29 to September 4 at South Bank Piazza, for a total prize purse of $US300,000.

The seven day competition is shaping up to be one of the most exciting of the 14 sports, with Games' organisers planning some fun entertainment to provide additional hype for spectators.

The competition draw will be announced following the World Championships in Austria in early August.

The South Bank Piazza will be transformed into a beach setting with more than 1050 tonnes of sand to be poured into the main arena and an adjacent practice court.

Additional grandstands will boost the venue's capacity to 2200, with two sessions of competition being played each day. Four days of play will take place in a single elimination format, with first round losers advancing to the classification round, and winners to the medals round.

South Bank Piazza will begin to be transformed from about August 17, when overlay specialists and organisers begin the bump-in process.

Plenty of seats still remain for sessions on August 29, 30 and 31 and September 3 and 4. The Saturday and Sunday sessions on September 1 and 2 have already booked out. Tickets are available at Ticketek outlets throughout the country, by phone on 133 877 or visit www.ticketek.com.
