Games Revel Uniforms and New Sponsor

The 2001 Goodwill Games Workforce will stand out in the crowds at the Games thanks to a stylish Queensland-designed uniform that features the badging of the event's newest sponsor.

Games organisers today unveiled the complete range of uniforms its workforce will wear during the 12-day sporting extravaganza in Brisbane.

A fashion parade held to show off the uniforms coincided with the announcement of the Federal Government as the Official Sponsor of the Games' volunteer program, through its Active Australia initiative.

2001 Goodwill Games Chairman Wayne Goss said the release of the uniforms heralded the Games moving into its final phase of preparations before the event begins on August 29.

"Our workforce members will start collecting their uniforms within the next month and will become very visible ambassadors for the Games in these striking outfits," Mr Goss said.

"The uniforms have been designed to reflect the excitement of the Games, while being functional and able to cope with the Queensland weather conditions.

"They strongly feature elements of the 2001 Goodwill Games logo, as well as the Active Australia logo."

The majority of the workforce will receive the base uniform kit comprising a t-shirt, trousers, bum bag, hat or cap and spray jacket.

There are six variations of the t-shirt to differentiate between certain groups. Field of Play, Technical, Triathlon, Medical, Surf Lifesaving and Games Services will each wear t-shirts with slightly different colour combinations.

Medal Ceremonies and Hospitality workforce will wear a more formal uniform to reflect their role.

Approximately 4,000 people will wear the uniforms, including volunteers, officials, selected contractors and the organising team. The uniforms were designed and produced by Gold Coast-based company Bev Schutt Designs.

Senator Ian Macdonald, Federal Minister for Regional Services, Territories and Local Government, announced Active Australia's sponsorship of the Goodwill Games volunteer program.

Active Australia, is a major program of the Australian Sports Commission and is the lead initiative for sport development in Australia. Active Australia works closely with volunteers, who are the backbone of sport and recreation events across the country.

Mr Goss said the 2001 Goodwill Games was delighted to welcome Active Australia to its family of sponsors.

"It is appropriate in this International Year of the Volunteer that Active Australia and the Federal Government have come on board to support the Games.

"Active Australia's support will assist us with our volunteer training and our operations at Games time.

"Volunteers are essential to the smooth running of the Goodwill Games, so we are very excited to have the lead agency for supporting sports volunteers as one of our sponsors.

"The 2001 Goodwill Games is an event all Australians can share in and we are pleased to have the Federal Government behind us."
