Local Transport Company to Bus Goodwill
Games Family Around Brisbane
TEN thousand hours of Goodwill
Games transport needs will be met and coordinated by Brisbane-based
company Coachtrans Australia.
More than 200 bus drivers, operations and support
staff will help coordinate a fleet of 100 luxury buses needed
to transport the Goodwill Games Family around Brisbane during
the 12-day sporting event.
The drivers, including some from Sydney and
Melbourne, will undergo rigorous training to familiarise themselves
with designated Goodwill Games transport routes, to ensure
athletes, coaches, media, VIP's and sponsors are delivered
to their venues in time for all the sporting and entertainment
action.
The company will also help with airport pick-ups
and transfers to Brisbane hotels hosting the sports delegation,
as well as with transfers to the Gold Coast where eight Surf
Lifesaving teams will compete over the weekend of September
1 and 2.
2001 Goodwill Games General Manager of Event
Direction and Delivery Clint Flood was pleased to announce
the transport contract.
``We are confident all the planning and training
Coachtrans Australia has already committed to this contract
will ensure the Goodwill Games run smoothly and all of our
tight schedules are met,'' Mr Flood said.
``We are working very closely with State and
local transport authorities to ensure the smooth traffic flow
of not only our coach network, but also that of other road
traffic.''
Coachtrans Business Development Manager Ross
Walker said the operation would be the biggest the company
had ever tackled.
``There will be up to 100 coaches on the road
at any one time coordinated through our Transport Operation
Centre located at the Theiss Building at South Bank,'' Mr
Walker said.
``We are committing our maximum effort
into the Games - this is a milestone event in the life of
the company and our staff are excited and looking forward
to taking on the challenge.''
